St Mary of the Angels was the church given by the Benedictines to Francis and his companions after they were evicted from the pig sties at Rivotorto. Also known as the Little Portion, the first friars lived round the old church in simple huts.
Later a much larger and elaborate (though by Italian standards fairly restrained) church was built over the top of the simple old one.
In the old cloisters beside the church are many evocative places, and modern works of art. This statue is of Francis and the cricket.
